A large 1972 addition stands in front of it and does not contribute.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is an outstanding example of civic architecture in Westchester County (Criterion C). It also meets Criterion A for its role in caring for sick women who could not afford their own recovery, and for the civic-mindedness of the wealthy donors who funded it. The institution grew out of the Lenox family's Presbyterian charitable work.","narrative":"Set well back from North Broadway in White Plains, this H-plan Tudor Revival building was completed in 1913 as the Presbyterian Rest for Convalescents. Its lower stories are brick, with stucco and half-timbering above, a tiled gabled roof, dormers and chimneys. Inside, the dining room keeps its wood paneling, beamed ceiling and brick fireplace, while two lounges off the entrance have neo-Classical details. The Rest began in 1893, founded by Rachel Lenox Kennedy of the wealthy Lenox family, to serve women too well for a hospital, yet too weak and too poor to manage at home. In 1913 Susan W. Duncan and Emma B. Kennedy funded a larger, purpose-designed replacement for the earlier school building. The institution ended in 1967, when the property passed to the Y.W.C.A., which added a Modern wing in 1972. The original building is valued for its architecture and its place in local charitable health care.","period_of_significance":"1913-1967","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals: Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The Rest closed in 1967 and the building and grounds were given to the Y.W.C.A. of White Plains and Central Westchester; the original building survives almost entirely intact inside and out. A 1972 addition is attached.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.692041-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000230.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000230/f69610e2ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000230/f69610e2ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WhitePlainsNY_YWCA_Housing.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WhitePlainsNY_YWCA_Housing.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323179","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presbyterian_Rest_for_Convalescents","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7240803"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/presbyterian-rest-for-convalescents-11000230/"}
