It was built in 1919, with an upper story added in 1926, and is now a church.","why_significant":"It is locally significant as a well-preserved example of Classical Revival bank design by Renwick, Aspinwall & Tucker. It also reflects the commercial history of the Dollar Savings Bank, founded in 1887 as the first thrift institution in the Bronx and later the borough's largest bank. The exterior is virtually unchanged and the interior banking hall retains much of its original character.","narrative":"Built in 1919 on a trapezoidal corner lot in the Bronx's Melrose neighborhood, this limestone building was the headquarters of the Dollar Savings Bank until about 1950. Renwick, Aspinwall & Tucker designed it in the Classical Revival style, with fluted Ionic pilasters, tall round-arched windows, a canted corner entrance and an entablature engraved with the bank's name. An attic story was added in 1926. Inside, the banking hall keeps its marble wainscot, bronze doors, coffered plaster ceiling, Corinthian pilasters and balconies, and the original vault remains in the basement. The bank was founded in 1887 as the first thrift institution in the Bronx, and it grew into the borough's largest bank by 1926. Since 1974 the building has served as a church, with the hall used as a sanctuary. It is recognized for its architecture and its link to the commercial development of the Bronx.","period_of_significance":"1919-1950","architect_builder":"Renwick, Aspinwall & Tucker","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Houses the Bronx Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church since 1974; the exterior is largely unchanged and the interior banking hall was adapted as a sanctuary.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.157974-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/11000228.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000228/0715d691db-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000228/0715d691db-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dollar_Savings_Bank_E147_3d_Av_Bx_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dollar_Savings_Bank_E147_3d_Av_Bx_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316463","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_Savings_Bank","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5289225"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/dollar-savings-bank-11000228/"}
