Most of its original structure survives, with limited additions in about 1900 and 1960.","narrative":"Built between 1862 and 1865, this one-story wood frame house at 624 Milam Street in downtown Liberty, Texas, follows the octagon plan promoted in the mid-nineteenth century. Thomas Jefferson Chambers is believed to have built it. Five of its eight sides remain in their original form, with a kitchen wing extending from the east side that may date to about 1865. The house sits on brick piers and has a central brick chimney, clapboard siding, and groups of wood sash windows, many with old glass. Changes include a small bathroom addition in the early 1900s and a bedroom addition and interior remodeling in 1960. The house is considered locally significant for its architecture. Octagon houses were popular only briefly, and just fourteen octagon buildings have been identified in Texas. This is the only one known in Liberty County. It has remained in the Chambers family and is one of the oldest buildings standing in Liberty. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1978.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1865","architect_builder":"Thomas Jefferson Chambers, Architect/Builder","architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth Century - Octagon Mode","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling, as it was historically; owned by the Chambers family throughout its history.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.927668-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/9728/40972836/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/11000156.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972836","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002715"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/liberty-county/chambers-thomas-jefferson-house-11000156/"}
