It is also linked to the Baker and St. John families.","narrative":"Built around 1866 for local physician Dr. John Alexander Preston Baker, this two-and-a-half-story frame farmhouse sits on a 2.5-acre parcel southwest of Abingdon in Washington County, Virginia. Its front-gable-and-side-wing form blends Greek Revival and Italianate features. Greek Revival touches include molded surrounds with crossettes, elongated windows and slender stair balusters, while paired cornice brackets, sawn porch brackets and an extended bay window reflect Italianate influence. Inside, a center-hall plan holds a walnut staircase, paneled wainscoting, decorative mantels and tall baseboards, much of it vernacular in character. A rear wing is believed to have served as the doctor's clinic. The Baker family sold the farm in 1890, beginning a hundred-year association with the St. John family. After standing vacant for 14 years following 1984, the house was restored and given a late twentieth-century rear addition. Its local architectural importance and high integrity supported its listing under Criterion C.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1866","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival; Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored and renovated by recent owners and in use as a single dwelling; the house sat vacant for 14 years after 1984.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.220177-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/6840/41684053/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/11000033.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000033/d228faaf07-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000033/d228faaf07-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BAKER-ST._JOHN_HOUSE,_ABINGDON,_WASHINGTON_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684053","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker%E2%80%93St._John_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16163831"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/washington-county/baker-st-john-house-additional-documentation-11000033/"}
