It includes a granite residence with an integral cast iron tower built in 1869, a c.1900 brick oil house and a c.1920 wood storage shed.","why_significant":"The station is argued to be significant under Criterion A for maritime history, as a local example of federal responsibility for safe navigation at the eastern entrance to Long Island Sound. Under Criterion C it is a state-level example of the Third Light-House District's standard plan for a fourth order lighthouse, one of six built to that design.","narrative":"Plum Island Light Station occupies about three acres at the northwest tip of Plum Island, overlooking Plum Gut, the channel between the island and Long Island's North Fork. Its centerpiece is a two-story, rock-faced pink granite lighthouse of 1869 with a cast iron tower rising from the front gable and bearing the date in iron numerals. A c.1900 brick oil house and a c.1920 wood storage shed also survive. The lighthouse was one of six built around Long Island Sound to a standard fourth order plan of the Third Light-House District, and it remained staffed until 1978. It replaced an 1827 stone tower and keeper's dwelling. The station is recognized for its architecture and for its place in the federal system of navigation aids guarding the eastern entrances to Long Island Sound. The lens was removed in 1994, interior surfaces are deteriorated, and the property is no longer in active use.","period_of_significance":"1869-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Romanesque (form classification); the narrative describes the design as Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The lighthouse is inactive and the property is vacant or not in use. Interior finishes are deteriorated from lack of heat and water infiltration. The Fresnel lens and clockwork were removed in 1994.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.852637-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_AK/11000014.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000014/63c5c61716-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/11000014/63c5c61716-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"USCoastGuard","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PlumislandNY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">USCoastGuard</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PlumislandNY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75325205","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plum_Island_Light","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7205330"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/plum-island-light-station-11000014/"}
