It was purportedly built in the 1850s as a schoolhouse, moved to its present site in 1867, and enlarged in the 1870s.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an unusual and intact example of vernacular Victorian religious architecture in Westchester County (Criterion C). It also meets Criterion A in social history for its role in the life of a small waterfront community, as a Sunday school, mission chapel and later Quaker meeting house.","narrative":"Rye Meeting House is a small wood-frame chapel on Milton Road in the Milton section of Rye, New York. It began as a schoolhouse, thought to date from before 1860, measuring 15 by 18 feet. A vestryman of Christ's Church bought it and donated it for use as a Sunday school, and it was moved to its present site in 1867. Additions in 1871 and 1875 brought a nave, a transept reading room, a chancel with stained glass, a vestry and a bell tower with Stick Style detailing. It served as the Milton Mission Chapel and later Grace Chapel. In 1959 it was converted into a Quaker meeting house, and it was later used as a Zen meditation center. The building is significant as an unusual, intact example of vernacular Victorian religious architecture in Westchester County and as a reflection of community life in a small shoreline hamlet. The nomination notes its poor condition, caused largely by flooding and moisture.","period_of_significance":"1867-1959","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Stick Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition described as fair to poor, with water infiltration, flooding, rotting wood near the foundation and non-weathertight windows. Historic and current function is listed as a religious facility.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.869601-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10001134.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10001134/f645665f3e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10001134/f645665f3e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Barry Eagel","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rye_Meeting_House_Library_on_left_DSCN1922.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Barry Eagel</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rye_Meeting_House_Library_on_left_DSCN1922.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323197","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rye_Meeting_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7384979"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/rye-meeting-house-10001134/"}
