Built in 1888 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company for the town and reassembled at its original location in 2004-2008.","why_significant":"It is one of only three surviving lenticular truss bridges remaining in place in Massachusetts, and the only surviving pony truss of the type. It shows early metal-truss design with wrought iron, pinned connections and a patented truss pattern. It also reflects Warren's late 19th-century industrial prosperity.","narrative":"Crossman Bridge, also called the Gilbert Road Bridge, carries Gilbert Road across the Quaboag River just outside West Warren, Massachusetts. The Berlin Iron Bridge Company built the 73-foot wrought-iron pony truss in 1888 under a $2,175 contract approved by town meeting. Its lens-shaped profile, pinned joints, lattice railing and cast-iron finials are typical of the firm's work. Local abutments were replaced in the late 1930s, and about 15 percent of the truss work was replaced during repairs from 2004 to 2008. The bridge is notable as one of only three lenticular truss bridges still standing in place in Massachusetts, and the only pony truss among them. It represents the period before standardized steel, riveted designs took over. It also reflects Warren's industrial peak, when nearby businesses such as the Crossman edge-tool factory relied on sturdy bridges. The bridge still carries traffic today.","period_of_significance":"1888-1960","architect_builder":"Berlin Iron Bridge Company, fabrication, erection","architectural_style":"OTHER: lenticular truss bridge","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The bridge remains in service, posted with a five-ton, two-axle truck limit, and was renovated in 2004-2008.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:10:51.609691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/7975/63797536/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/10001065.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10001065/85a4c38e2c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10001065/85a4c38e2c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WarrenMA_CrossmanBridge.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WarrenMA_CrossmanBridge.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797536","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossman_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16890708"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/crossman-bridge-10001065/"}
