It is also significant under Criterion C as an example of a three-part vertical commercial block designed by local architects and built with local products.","narrative":"Rising six stories above downtown Greenville, Texas, the Washington Hotel at 2612 Washington Street opened on August 18, 1926. Reinforced concrete forms the structure, with wire-cut brick facades in red, ochre and buff and cream terra-cotta trim. Designed by local architects George Lindsey and Roy Henry Kilmer and built by the Christy-Dolph Construction Company, it housed hotel rooms and apartments above ground-floor shops, a lobby with a marble stair, and a mezzanine dining room. It was the tallest building in the city when completed. Greenville had grown into a railroad hub and cotton market, yet its older hotels no longer served the travelers passing through. Local businessmen and residents funded the new hotel to fill that gap. Later known as the Cadillac Hotel, it saw residents leave in 1986 and was damaged by fire in 1992. Water infiltration destroyed much interior finish, and it stood vacant until a rehabilitation began under a new owner after 2008.","period_of_significance":"1926","architect_builder":"Lindsey, George, and Kilmer, Roy Henry","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements / Commercial Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant and deteriorating after a 1992 fire and long water damage; a rehabilitation using federal historic tax credits was underway under the owner who acquired it in December 2008.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.301103-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/36/9726/40972636/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/10000962.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000962/2b217b8ed0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000962/2b217b8ed0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Washington_Hotel_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Washington_Hotel_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972636","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002702"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/hunt-county/washington-hotel-10000962/"}
