The stone core was built in 1865-66 for the Urbana Wine Company and expanded repeatedly.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the winery is significant for agriculture and industry as the second winery bonded in New York State, and as the winery known for introducing European vinifera grapes to the Finger Lakes. It is also significant as an excellent example of winery design, with a hillside-built Italianate core and later additions showing industry evolution.","narrative":"Gold Seal Winery is a hillside complex on the west shore of Keuka Lake, north of Hammondsport. Its core is a three-story stone Italianate building from 1865-66, built into the slope so barrel-vaulted cellars stay cool and goods move easily downhill through production. Over time it gained stone, concrete and steel additions, a separate stone brandy distillery, a concrete pomace house and a hillside reservoir. Founded as the Urbana Wine Company, it was the second winery bonded in New York State. It made Imperial champagne with French-trained winemakers, adopted the Gold Seal trademark in 1887, and survived Prohibition by producing sacramental and medicinal wines. Charles Fournier later brought French-American hybrid grapes to the Finger Lakes, and Dr. Konstantin Frank was hired in 1953. The property was listed for its role in agriculture and industry and as a well-preserved example of traditional winery design. The complex is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"1865-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate; French Second Empire","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant. The form notes that the reservoir roofing has deteriorated and that some distillery windows are boarded up.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.894369-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000946.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000946/50df2efe67-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000946/50df2efe67-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gold_Seal_Winery_Apr_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gold_Seal_Winery_Apr_11.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321975","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_Seal_Winery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5578850"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/steuben-county/gold-seal-winery-10000946/"}
