It represents the fashionable middle-class housing built along West Main Street in the Late Victorian era. It is one of the more intact houses on this part of the corridor, where many neighbors have been altered.","narrative":"Located at 134 West Main Street in Middletown, New York, this two-story frame house was built around 1884 and shows Queen Anne and Eastlake styling. Its intersecting gable roof, irregular footprint, cut-away bays, a two-tiered porch with turned posts and spindle friezes, and mixed clapboard and shingle siding define its appearance. Inside, the original plan survives, along with the cantilevered staircase, mantels, spindle friezes, five-panel doors, plaster walls and decorative glass. A garage from the early 20th century stands at the rear. The house was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of middle-class housing from the period when West Main Street developed as a residential area northwest of the business core. Samuel S. Purvis owned it earlier and it may have been built for him. John G. Beakes, a coal merchant who came to Middletown around 1910, lived there with his family in the early 20th century.","period_of_significance":"c. 1884-c. 1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling, with its historic function and current function both listed as single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.89267-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000939.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000939/f60256b4ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000939/f60256b4ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JOHN_G._BEAKES_HOUSE,_MIDDLETOWN,_ORANGE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320572","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_G._Beakes_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q136841383"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/beakes-john-g-house-10000939/"}
