The barn and annex contribute to the character of Dudley Center and the Center and Tanyard roads intersection. They are tied to the Black Tavern from the second quarter of the 19th century, and the site has archaeological potential.","narrative":"Two outbuildings beside the Black Tavern in Dudley Center, Massachusetts, a barn and an annex, were added to the tavern's listing in 2010. The tavern itself was built in 1804 by cabinetmaker Hezekiah Healy on the Boston to Hartford stagecoach route. The side-gabled barn dates to about 1825 and has a hand-hewn braced timber frame. It is the only English Barn among the four or five 19th-century barns left in Dudley. The annex was moved to the site around 1830 and later served as Warren Goodell's shoe shop. Nichols College altered both buildings into dormitories in the 1950s. The Black Tavern Historical Society bought them in 2002 and has been restoring their historic appearance with volunteer and community support. They now host events and local history exhibits. Together with the tavern, they help keep the streetscape near the Town Common intact. The site may also hold archaeological remains from Native American and colonial occupation.","period_of_significance":"1804-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"English Barn","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Both buildings are owned by the Black Tavern Historical Society and are being restored. They are used for events, local history exhibits and interpretation of Dudley's agricultural and industrial history. The rear elevations still await restoration funding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:10:51.923091-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/58/7972/63797258/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/10000928.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000928/b73f3293a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000928/b73f3293a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DudleyMA_BlackTavern.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DudleyMA_BlackTavern.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100004707","name":"Dudley Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/dudley-hill-historic-district-100004707/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797258","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Tavern","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4921995"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/black-tavern-boundary-increase-10000928/"}
