The 2.95-acre property also includes an 1863 rectory, a cemetery in use before 1840, and stone gateposts with an iron gate.","why_significant":"The church is significant in Architecture as a highly intact example of an English parish church-inspired Gothic Revival design by Richard Upjohn & Co., the firm that popularized the style in the mid-19th century. It is also significant in Social History for its role in the lives of its congregation and the wider community since 1858. It is one of 38 rural churches in the New York Diocese designed by Upjohn or his firm.","narrative":"Christ Episcopal Church stands on a rise above the west bank of the Hudson River in the hamlet of Marlboro, Ulster County. The brick church was built in 1858 to replace an 1836 building lost to fire in 1857. Plans came from Richard Upjohn & Co., drawn by W. Charles Babcock, and follow the small rural Gothic Revival designs Upjohn popularized. The building has a stone foundation, brownstone trim, a slate roof in alternating colored bands, a square entry tower and a polygonal apse. Inside are an open timber ceiling and stained glass, much of it by members of the Armstrong family. The property also holds a rectory built in 1863, a cemetery with about 150 graves, and stone gateposts. The church is recognized for architecture, as a well-preserved example of English parish church-inspired design, and for its long role in the social life of its congregation and community. Major changes were limited to a basement hall and entry porch added in the early 1980s.","period_of_significance":"Pre-1840 (cemetery) - 1960","architect_builder":"Richard Upjohn & Co.
