It reflects the wealth and standing of John Brand, Sr., a self-made brick maker, grocer and tobacco businessman, and the prosperity of Elmira in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Its 1890s interior alterations and the ca. 1915 duplex conversion respected the original fabric.","narrative":"Built around 1871 at 405 Maple Avenue in Elmira, this large brick Italianate house was the home of John Brand, Sr., a German-born businessman who came to Elmira in 1851. Brand made bricks, ran a grocery, and helped establish the county's tobacco packing and processing trade through John Brand & Co. The house has a three- by five-bay main block of two and one-half stories on a high bluestone basement, with a low hip roof, broad eaves, segmentally arched windows with cast-iron lintels, and stacked front porches. Inside are heavy moulded woodwork, a black walnut main stair, and an oak-detailed dining room and mahogany-detailed bedroom added in the 1890s. Around 1915 Charles W. Brand converted it to a duplex with minimal changes to the plan. A contributing garage and a fountain basin remain on the lot. The house was listed for its well-preserved Italianate design and its link to Elmira's nineteenth-century industrial prosperity.","period_of_significance":"1871-ca. 1915","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is single dwelling, with a multiple dwelling (duplex) function also listed; the house has been described as intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.780045-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000913.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000913/6a8f4ca16b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000913/6a8f4ca16b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Brand_Sr_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Brand_Sr_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"13000599","name":"Maple Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/maple-avenue-historic-district-13000599/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316790","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Brand_Sr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6222959"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/brand-john-sr-house-10000913/"}
