It was built in what was then the center of activity of Marlborough and has served its congregation and community for 200 years. It is a distinctive example of a Federal vernacular meeting house, with later 19th and early 20th century alterations showing changing architectural fashions.","narrative":"Lattingtown Baptist Church is a two-story, front-gabled timber-frame meeting house built around 1810 on a half-acre lot along Old Indian Road in the Marlborough hamlet of Lattingtown. The congregation, organized in the late 1780s and incorporated in 1807, bought the land in 1808. Farmers and tradesmen built the plain country church to serve as the spiritual and social center of the community. Its original plan survives, including a deep gallery on chamfered posts and wide board floors. In the third quarter of the 19th century it received Gothic and picturesque touches such as wide eaves, shouldered window architraves and pointed-arch doors, and a belfry was added about 1932. A cemetery with more than one hundred graves, several of them Revolutionary War soldiers, a 19th-century privy and stone walls complete the property. It was listed for its role in the settlement and social life of Marlborough, when Lattingtown was the town's leading hamlet, and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"c.1810-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Late Victorian/Gothic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church, with the cemetery on the property; historic and current function are both listed as church and cemetery.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.931461-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000855.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000855/146b05ab1f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000855/146b05ab1f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarlboroNY_LattingtownBaptistChurch.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarlboroNY_LattingtownBaptistChurch.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322661","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lattingtown_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6497161"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/lattingtown-baptist-church-10000855/"}
