It was built in 1902 to designs by architect Harry E. Donnell for Oakley R. DeLamater.","why_significant":"The house was built as a wedding gift for Oakley DeLamater's wife, Elizabeth Hasbrouk, and belongs to the estate holdings of the DeLamater family, whose Iron Works helped build the Civil War ironclad Monitor. It is one of two DeLamater family houses in the Eaton's Neck and Asharoken area, the other being the Delamater-Bevin House. It also retains much of its original design and materials after restoration.","narrative":"Built in 1902 on a hilltop in Asharoken, on Long Island's North Shore, The Crest is a large Tudor-style summer house designed by architect Harry E. Donnell. Oakley R. DeLamater built it as a wedding gift for his wife, Elizabeth Hasbrouk. He was the son of Cornelius DeLamater, whose New York iron works supplied machinery for the Civil War ironclad Monitor. The house has five fireplaces, eight original bedrooms, a servants' wing, Tudor gables, cypress trim, cedar shake shingles and hardwood floors. Its site once covered 37 acres with water views on three sides. The Great Depression cost the family the estate in the 1930s, and later owners subdivided the land to about five acres. A three-bay garage is the main addition. After years of neglect, restorations in 1993 and again in 2006-2007 repaired plaster, hardware, floors and grounds. The house is listed for its architecture, its association with the DeLamater family and its largely intact historic character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Harry E.
