It was named for early settler John Ellice and served as District #2 school until 1931. Enough original fabric survives inside and out to show how the school looked and worked.","narrative":"Ellice School is a one-story, two-room Greek Revival schoolhouse on Pleasant Street in the Rockville section of Millis, Massachusetts. Built around 1849 as District #2 school for the town of Medway, it passed to Millis when that town was incorporated in 1885, and the school committee then named it for John Ellice, an early Rockville settler. The wood-shingled building measures 35 by 53 feet and rests on granite and brick foundations. It taught local children until 1931. Later, local women sewed clothing for the poor here during the Depression and made bandages during World War II. Alterations include moving the entrances from the gable front to the sides, around 1915 to 1920. The building is now vacant and used for storage, and it is badly deteriorated, with plywood over its windows and fallen ceilings. Blackboards, wainscoting, doors, coat pegs and some window sash remain, along with granite fence posts and a stone wall on the lot, so the school's appearance in use can still be understood.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Vacant and used only for storage; in deteriorated condition with boarded windows, caved-in ceilings and failed plaster.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:10:52.008836-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/22/7964/63796422/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/10000785.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000785/573eef55f8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000785/573eef55f8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MillisMA_ElliceSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MillisMA_ElliceSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796422","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellice_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16890986"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/ellice-school-10000785/"}
