It was recognized by the AIA Houston Chapter and published in Arts and Architecture. It is an early Texas example of a glass-walled, long-span pavilion designed for a hurricane-prone shoreline.","narrative":"Overlooking Galveston Bay in La Porte, Texas, this 1956 dance pavilion was built in Sylvan Beach Park after Harris County bought the land in 1954. Houston architects Greacen & Brogniez designed an octagonal, glass-walled ballroom under a 135-foot thin shell concrete dome with a central oculus, attached to a foyer block and an open terrace deck. The whole building sits ten feet above grade on deep concrete piers to resist hurricane storm surge. It replaced earlier pavilions on the site that were lost to storms. The structure is considered significant for its architecture and its method of construction, and as an early Texas example of thin shell concrete roofing. It won recognition from the Houston AIA chapter and was published in a national architectural journal. Alterations followed Hurricanes Carla and Alicia, including a 1962 south addition, a 1980 entrance ramp and a levee, but the elevated ballroom remains its defining feature. The pavilion has been closed since Hurricane Ike in 2008.","period_of_significance":"1956","architect_builder":"Greacen & Brogniez (R.H.Brogniez, Thomas E.
