Its five-bay, center-entrance form is more typical of rural areas than of a growing village. It is one of the oldest houses in South Hill and retains its integrity as an early example of the type.","narrative":"Built around 1828 on a high bank above Six Mile Creek, the house at 107 Giles Street in Ithaca is a one-and-one-half-story Greek Revival dwelling with side gables, clapboard siding, a stone foundation and a one-story wing. Its five symmetrical bays, center entry with sidelights and transom, cornice returns and frieze windows reflect the style. Later Italianate updates include a bracketed hood over the door and two-over-two windows on the main block, while older nine- and six-light sash survive at the rear. Inside, the original room layout, plank floors, curving staircase and battered, shouldered window and door trim remain. The house was first oriented toward an old turnpike that was later relocated. It was home to the family of Rufus Bates, a village president of Ithaca and local business figure, from 1866 to 1948. It was listed for its architecture as a rural-style Greek Revival house surviving in a neighborhood where many older properties have been altered.","period_of_significance":"c.1828","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Restored in recent years; the basement was converted to an apartment in the 1940s, and the current function is listed as multiple dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.903298-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000595.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000595/163b558cdd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000595/163b558cdd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RUFUS_AND_FLORA_BATES_HOUSE,_ITHACA,_TOMPKINS_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322467","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rufus_and_Flora_Bates_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7378120"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tompkins-county/bates-rufus-and-flora-house-10000595/"}
