It retains Greek Revival features from 1853 along with late Victorian upgrades made in 1906-07. The period of significance ends with the last contributing alterations.","narrative":"Set on a small lot in the hill hamlet of Crum Creek, Fulton County, this two-and-a-half-story frame church was built in 1853 for the Oppenheim and St. Johnsville Union Society. Over eighty subscribers pledged funds, and land was donated by John and Charity Youran. The builder and designer are not recorded. Its Greek Revival form, with a triangular pediment effect, clapboard siding and open square belfry, closely matched the Methodist church across the street, and the pair became known locally as the Twin Churches. In 1906-07 the building was moved about forty feet to gain a full basement on a limestone foundation, then clad in brick veneer and given a slate roof, stained glass windows, new pews and a tin ceiling. The church was rededicated on March 29, 1907. It was reorganized as a Lutheran congregation in 1882 and remains a church. Its meetinghouse form, Greek Revival details and early twentieth-century alterations make it a representative rural example.","period_of_significance":"1853-1907","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival; Late Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a church, with the historic and current function listed as religion.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.297889-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000485.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317874","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oppenheim_and_St._Johnsville_Union_Society_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7098545"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/fulton-county/oppenheim-and-st-johnsville-union-society-church-10000485/"}
