It keeps original clapboards, shutters, Victorian doors, a pedimented entrance and 6/6 windows. It also illustrates how a rural school district responded to mid-nineteenth-century educational reform and increased public school funding in New York.","narrative":"Rosendale Common School is a small timber frame schoolhouse on Rosendale Road in Niskayuna, Schenectady County. Probably built around 1850, it is a one-and-a-half-story, five-bay building with a steeply pitched gable roof, wooden clapboards, a dry-laid stone foundation and a pedimented entrance with double doors. Six-over-six windows, louvered shutters and a later rear addition from about the 1960s complete the exterior. The school served the Rosendale district until 1915, when its students moved to a new brick school, and it later housed Niskayuna Grange #1542. Its significance rests on architecture and on what it shows about New York's rural schools. The 1849 Free School Act and later laws increased school funding, and many one-room schoolhouses followed. Other Niskayuna schoolhouses of the period have been converted to homes, enlarged or altered beyond recognition, which leaves this building as the only one that retains its integrity. The property is now listed as vacant and not in use.","period_of_significance":"c1850","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; the building is owned by the Town of Niskayuna.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.78427-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000482.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321697","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosendale_Common_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7368553"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schenectady-county/rosendale-common-school-10000482/"}
