It also qualifies under Criterion C as the largest surviving train station in Loudoun County, typical of Southern Railway depot design, and it retains much of its original plan and fabric.","narrative":"Built in 1904 by the Southern Railway, this board-and-batten depot in Purcellville, Virginia, served as both passenger station and freight house. The rectangular frame building measures 18 by 86 feet and has deep eaves on triangular knee braces, a standing-seam metal roof and a projecting bay in the ticket office. Its original plan placed separate white and colored waiting rooms on either side of a central ticket office, with a large freight room at the west end. Passenger service ended in 1951 and freight service in 1967 or 1968, after which a seed mill used the building for storage. A local preservation association bought it in the early 1990s and restored it in the late 1990s with federal transportation funds. The Town of Purcellville now owns it and uses it as a museum, meeting space and trail restrooms. It is regarded as the largest surviving station in Loudoun County and recalls the area's farm shipping and rail travel.","period_of_significance":"1904-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored in the late 1990s after sitting vacant; now town-owned and used as a meeting facility, museum and public restrooms for the W&OD Trail.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.459645-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/6816/41681667/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/10000307.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000307/5121e7d5b1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000307/5121e7d5b1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DwayneP","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Purcellville-VA-Train-Station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DwayneP</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Purcellville-VA-Train-Station.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82001822","name":"Goose Creek Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/goose-creek-historic-district-82001822/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681667","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purcellville_Train_Station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713107"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/purcellville-train-station-10000307/"}
