The church was built in 1862 in the Greek Revival style and moved and remodeled in 1903-04 in the late Gothic Revival style; the brick parsonage dates to about 1850.","why_significant":"The church is argued to be an intact, representative example of late Gothic Revival religious architecture in Ellenville (Criterion C). Traces of its 1862 Greek Revival origin survive, and the interior retains its 1903-04 character. The parsonage, built for industrialist Isaac Newton Broadhead, is a highly intact and sophisticated local example of Greek Revival domestic architecture.","narrative":"Christ Lutheran Church and its neighboring parsonage occupy a village lot on Center Street in Ellenville, Ulster County. The church began in 1862 as a vernacular Greek Revival building for a German Lutheran congregation. In 1903-04 it was moved across Ann Street, turned to face Center Street, enlarged with a kitchen extension and a one-story annex, and remodeled in the late Gothic Revival style. Work included lancet-arched stained-glass windows, a rose window, an octagonal spire, and carved woodwork and liturgical furniture. A fire in 1912 destroyed the roof and part of the attic, and pressed-tin ceilings were installed during repairs. Parts of the 1862 framing, massing, and molded entablature survive. Beside the church stands a brick Greek Revival house of about 1850, built for industrialist Isaac Newton Broadhead, which the congregation has used as a parsonage since 1903. Both buildings retain a high degree of integrity, and together they were recognized for architectural significance.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850 - 1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as a church; the parsonage has housed church staff since 1903, most recently the sexton.
