Its asymmetrical massing, round tower, wrap-around porch with Ionic columns, and detailed interiors illustrate the style. The 1904 conversion into a 25-room year-round mansion also reflects the shift from summer homes to permanent residences in Skaneateles.","narrative":"Hazelhurst, at 150 East Genesee Street in Skaneateles, is a three-story Queen Anne mansion overlooking the north end of Skaneateles Lake. It began as a modest summer home built around 1866 for William Loney. Theodore Specht of New York City bought it in 1899, and in 1904 he hired contractor Edward Dent to enlarge it into a 25-room year-round residence with family suites and servants' quarters. The house has asymmetrical massing, a round three-story tower with a conical roof, many cross gables, and a wrap-around porch with Ionic columns and a porte-cochere. Inside, a grand open staircase, Corinthian columns, plaster ornament, fireplaces and a sun porch with a honeycomb beamed ceiling survive. Later uses included a guest home, nursing home, bed and breakfast and, most recently, assisted living, with rear additions added for access. It was listed for its architecture, as a strong example of late Queen Anne design in the early twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1904","architect_builder":"Edward Dent, builder","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Converted to an assisted-living residence for the elderly, with compatible rear additions; the house had earlier served as a guest home, nursing home, single-family home and bed and breakfast.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.36659-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000302.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000302/4b2805dd3b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000302/4b2805dd3b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hazelhurst_(Skaneateles,_NY).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hazelhurst_(Skaneateles,_NY).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320365","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazelhurst_(Skaneateles,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5688079"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/hazelhurst-10000302/"}
