It was enlarged in the early twentieth century and has a garage and a later brick cottage on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Riverside is significant under Criterion C for architecture. It shows a mid-nineteenth-century house transitional between Greek Revival and Italianate styles, remodeled in the early 1900s with Colonial Revival roof and dormers. It retains largely original Greek Revival interior woodwork and a high degree of integrity. It is also described as the oldest dwelling in Riverton and was present during the 1862 Battle of Front Royal.","narrative":"Riverside is a large brick house on a small hill above the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in Riverton, now part of Front Royal. Built in 1850, it has a seven-bay, T-shaped form on a limestone foundation, with a Doric portico and wide bracketed eaves that blend Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Around 1900 its original flat roof was replaced by a hipped roof with dormers in Colonial Revival taste, and brick wings were added in 1921. Inside, most of the walnut, cherry and pine woodwork remains unpainted and Greek Revival in character. Two upstairs bedrooms in the side wings were originally reachable only by private staircases, and a hidden space under the dining room is said to have held valuables during the Civil War. The house stood near the 1862 Battle of Front Royal and was used as a hospital and resting place. It is described as the oldest dwelling in Riverton and is listed for its architecture and integrity.","period_of_significance":"1850-1921","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th-century Greek Revival; Late Victorian Italianate; Late 19th & early 20th century Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the house has had few alterations in the past fifty years.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.424352-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/23/6840/41684023/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95001172.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/100002134/57f736ca70-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/100002134/57f736ca70-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverside_entrance,_near_South_Boston.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Riverside_entrance,_near_South_Boston.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":null,"wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q140303424"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/halifax-county/riverside-100002134/"}
