Weatherboard siding covers a post-and-beam frame set on stone piers. The first floor served as a school and as rental space for civic, religious and governmental groups, and was opened up by removing a partition in 1880. The second-floor lodge room keeps its original pine walls, ceiling, flooring, officers' stations and podiums, arranged according to Masonic tradition. The building is considered Wake County's oldest surviving Masonic lodge and school building and the only antebellum lodge in Holly Springs. It housed the town's earliest school, including classes for girls beginning in the 1850s, and the lodge later took control of the Holly Springs Institute, renamed the Masonic Institute in 1892. Its significance covers social history and education from about 1852 to 1959.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1852-1959","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition; still used as a Masonic meeting hall, with some structural problems noted since the 1980s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.898592-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7186/47718685/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/10000164.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000164/4677066d24-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000164/4677066d24-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jon Harrison","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Lodge,_Holly_Springs,_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Harrison</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Masonic_Lodge,_Holly_Springs,_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718685","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_Springs_Masonic_Lodge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708642"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/holly-springs-masonic-lodge-10000164/"}
