The nominated property also includes a recently reconstructed playing field, counted as a non-contributing site.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is an outstanding example of Art Deco public architecture in Westchester County, with exterior and interior decoration that is unusually bold for a public school. It is also significant in education, reflecting the importance placed on schooling in a suburban community during the Depression. The building retains a high level of integrity despite window replacement and three rear additions.","narrative":"Tuckahoe High School, at 65 Siwanoy Boulevard in Eastchester, New York, was built in 1930-31 to serve students from Tuckahoe, Bronxville and Chester Heights. Before it opened, Tuckahoe had no high school of its own. The New York firm Knappe & Morris designed it, and Dalton-Millimet Co. built it. Costs rose well above the $600,000 estimate, which upset taxpayers already struggling in the Depression. The symmetrical brick building has cast-stone trim carved with stylized foliage, rosettes and geometric shapes of apparent Aztec inspiration. Inside, the vestibule, lobby, halls and auditorium keep tiled walls, terrazzo floors, ceramic plaques and plaster ornament. Knappe & Morris designed more than 30 schools, nearly all in Georgian or Colonial Revival styles, and this was their only Art Deco school in the nominated group of notable works. The nomination calls it the most exuberant Art Deco public school proposed for listing in New York State. Rear additions from about 1960, the 1980s and 2006 do not contribute, and the school remains in educational use.","period_of_significance":"1930-34","architect_builder":"Knappe & Morris","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: Art Deco","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a school, serving both the high school and middle school; the original windows have been replaced and three additions have been built at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.295108-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000045.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000045/d0cd89742e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000045/d0cd89742e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DoctorLawyer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tms-front.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DoctorLawyer</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tms-front.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323269","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuckahoe_High_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7851026"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/tuckahoe-high-school-10000045/"}
