It is the only intact historic religious building in the hamlet. It is also one of the largest and most intact reminders of the hamlet's logging and milling heyday.","narrative":"Built between 1856 and 1859, this former Methodist Episcopal church sits on Harrisburg Road in Stony Creek, an Adirondack foothill hamlet once busy with logging, milling and tanning. It is a pegged timber-frame building with clapboard siding, a stone foundation, a metal-clad gable roof and a bell tower added in 1874. Its design is a simple, vernacular Greek Revival: a pedimented front gable, wide corner pilasters, a three-bay facade and a heavy trabeated central entrance. Unknown local carpenters appear to have worked from mid-nineteenth century pattern books, showing how the style reached remote parts of Warren County by the 1850s. The original windows were replaced with memorial stained glass in the 1950s. The church is the only intact historic religious building in the hamlet and remains a prominent landmark. Deconsecrated in the 1990s, it is being turned into a community room by the neighboring library. It recalls the hamlet's prosperous nineteenth-century past.","period_of_significance":"1856 - 1874","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century Revivals/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Deconsecrated in the 1990s; listed current function is vacant, and it is being converted into a community room in conjunction with the adjacent library.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.947802-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000031.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000031/a2fb103046-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000031/a2fb103046-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Methodist_Episcopal_Church_Stony_Creek_NY_Aug_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Methodist_Episcopal_Church_Stony_Creek_NY_Aug_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322785","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodist_Episcopal_Church_(Stony_Creek,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6823791"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/methodist-episcopal-church-10000031/"}
