Gerity on a 0.33-acre city lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as a distinguished and largely intact example of a large-scale Queen Anne/Eastlake residence in Elmira. It retains elaborate decorative finishes in wood, tile, metal and plaster. It reflects the prosperity and taste of the city's late nineteenth-century business leaders.","narrative":"Built around 1880 at 415 William Street in Elmira, this two-story brick and stone house was home to William S. Gerity, a druggist who became a partner in the wholesale and retail firm Gerity Brothers. Its irregular cross-gable form, high gable roofs, bracketed cornices and heavy verge boards mark it as Queen Anne in style. Cut-stone sills, lintels and belt courses and floral terra cotta plaques decorate the masonry. Inside, the stair hall holds Eastlake woodwork in varnished hardwood, built-in banquettes, stained glass and a turned newel lamp standard. The main rooms keep plaster garland ornament, and Minton-type tile paves the vestibule and hearths. A bentwood and brass curtain rod survives between the butler's pantry and dining room. The builder is thought, though not confirmed, to be William's father Thomas Gerity, a prominent Elmira contractor. The house is valued as a largely intact example of early large-scale Queen Anne design and of the city's late nineteenth-century prosperity.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880","architect_builder":"Thomas Gerity [?]","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic uses were a single dwelling and a sanitarium; the current function is listed as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.709052-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000025.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000025/6abe3616de-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000025/6abe3616de-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_S_Gerity_House,_Elmira,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_S_Gerity_House,_Elmira,_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316820","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Gerity_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8017937"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/gerity-william-s-house-10000025/"}
