It blends Queen Anne massing with Shingle style sheathing and early Colonial Revival details, and shows high craftsmanship in stone, shingles, oak woodwork, leaded glass and tile. It also reflects Elmira's late nineteenth-century prosperity and the work of two of its architects.","narrative":"Built around 1890 on Maple Avenue in Elmira, this large Queen Anne style house was commissioned by John Brand Jr., a wealthy wholesaler of leaf tobacco who also served on the Parks Commission and as an alderman. Brand Park, next to the house, was named in his honor. Local architects Otis Dockstader and John Considine designed the building, which has a rock-faced granite first story, wood shingle upper floors, octagonal engaged towers with conical roofs and gambrel cross gables. Inside, a two-flight oak stair rises to a landing lit by a Palladian window with leaded stained glass. Fireplaces have mirrored overmantels and glazed tile surrounds with figural plaques. The house combines Queen Anne, Shingle and early Colonial Revival elements and is regarded as an important, largely intact example of eclectic domestic architecture. It reflects the prosperity of late nineteenth-century Elmira and the tastes of its business leaders. It now serves as multiple dwellings.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1890 - ca. 1930","architect_builder":"Otis Dockstader and John Considine","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic single dwelling; current use is multiple dwelling (listed as Parkside Apartments).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.448461-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/10000024.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000024/8f14b1ec3f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/10000024/8f14b1ec3f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Brand_Jr_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Brand_Jr_House,_Elmira_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316788","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Brand_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6222956"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/brand-john-jr-house-10000024/"}
