It grew up around the New York & Harlem Railroad depot from about 1850 and includes 67 contributing resources.","why_significant":"The district shows how a railroad depot town developed from the 1850s into a village center with commercial blocks, merchants' houses, churches and rail buildings. Its buildings span Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne and Shingle Style design. The surviving depot buildings are described as among the most significant along the Harlem line.","narrative":"Main Street Historic District covers the commercial heart of Millerton, a village in the northeastern corner of Dutchess County, New York, close to the Connecticut line. The village took shape around 1850 when the New York & Harlem Railroad arrived, and the depot drew railroad workers, merchants and tradesmen. The district includes the former rail corridor with its passenger and freight buildings, a dense stretch of storefronts along Center Street and Main Street, and an uphill residential section of merchants' houses mixed with churches. Greek Revival houses from the 1850s and 1860s sit alongside Italianate commercial buildings, Queen Anne alterations and a Shingle Style storefront. Many shops followed a local pattern of two-story front-gable buildings with porches over ground-floor storefronts. Churches such as the Gothic Revival Baptist Church mark the eastern end of the historic street. Together the buildings document Millerton's growth from a railroad depot settlement to an incorporated village in 1875, and its role as a trading center for the surrounding Harlem Valley.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century Greek Revival; Late Victorian Queen Anne; Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements Shingle Style","criteria":[],"status_note":"Rail service ended in 1980 and the tracks were removed the next year; the right-of-way is being redeveloped as a rail trail.
