It is significant for architecture as a small-scale example of a bridge type that preceded standardized metal truss bridges, and for transportation as evidence of the village's road improvements in the later 19th century.","narrative":"This small stone arch bridge on Dock Hill Road Extension in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, once carried Bay View Avenue over a creek running down from the hills to the west. It is a single elliptical arch of locally quarried stone set in mortar. Finely dressed, hand-tooled ashlar voussoirs form the arch, while the spandrels and low parapet walls are of rougher stone, topped with rectangular copings. No construction records were found, so a date of about 1870 is assigned from comparison with other Hudson Valley stone arch bridges. The builder is unknown. The bridge dates from a period when tourism helped the village grow. It was bypassed when Bay View Avenue was rerouted, after Storm King Highway was completed in the early 1920s, and a Civilian Conservation Corps concrete arch bridge was built just to the west in the 1930s. It is regarded as the most intact 19th-century stone arch bridge in the village and still serves limited traffic and pedestrians.","period_of_significance":"c. 1870-c. 1935","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently carries limited vehicular and pedestrian use and is in a relatively good state of repair; paved with asphalt.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.283952-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09001230.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001230/8f0dd4af0d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001230/8f0dd4af0d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DOCK_HILL_ROAD_EXTENSION_STONE_ARCH_BRIDGE,_ORANGE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314237","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_Hill_Road_Extension_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5287196"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/dock-hill-road-extension-stone-arch-bridge-09001230/"}
