It holds about 115 graves.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the cemetery is a rare surviving vestige of Balmville's earliest years, before the large estate developments of the later 19th century. Its age and its link to the hamlet's early settlement families satisfy the cemetery criteria consideration. With the Balmville Tree, it remains one of the hamlet's key historic features.","narrative":"Balmville Cemetery is a one-acre burial ground on the east side of Albany Post Road in the hamlet of Balmville, Orange County, New York. Established around 1800, with the earliest recorded deaths in the Butterworth family dating to 1802 and 1805, it holds about 115 graves, most from roughly 1830 to 1860. Families buried there include the Butterworths, Fowlers, Weeds, Holmes and Merritts. The markers are mostly modest 19th-century stones in marble and brownstone, carved with motifs such as weeping willows and rose medallions. Over 100 have fallen, and many lie under thin soil and groundcover. Only the Butterworth plot retains its iron fence. The site is significant as a surviving link to Balmville's early settlement, before the hamlet was reshaped by large estates in the later 19th century. Along with the nearby Balmville Tree, it remains a defining historic feature of the hamlet. College-affiliated survey and restoration work is under way.","period_of_significance":"c. 1802-1877","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Overgrown in places and affected by neglect, limited maintenance and vandalism; most markers have fallen but remain, and the grounds are being surveyed and restored by affiliates of Mount Saint Mary College, the landowner.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.204557-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09001229.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001229/be62584835-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001229/be62584835-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ.
