The ca. 1845-46 cobblestone carriage house is a rare surviving agricultural outbuilding, as only about two dozen cobblestone barns are believed to have been built in New York State.","narrative":"Along Lake Road in Sodus, a cobblestone farmhouse and carriage house sit near Maxwell Creek, a short distance from Lake Ontario. William Swales built both around 1845-46 as a wedding present for his daughter Elizabeth and her husband, John Preston. The L-shaped house has walls of small, variously colored field cobbles laid in neat rows, with limestone quoins at the corners and flat-arched limestone lintels over the openings. The front elevation uses the smallest and most regular stones, while the side and rear walls are rougher. Inside, a center hall, parlors, and several original fireplaces survive. The two-story carriage house is a rarer find, since only about two dozen cobblestone barns are believed to have been built in New York State. The Prestons farmed fruit and ran a gristmill nearby, and their Gaylord descendants lived on the property until about 1973. It was listed for its architecture and its representative use of the cobblestone method of construction.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1845-46 to ca. 1880","architect_builder":"William Swales [Swails] built the farmhouse and carriage house (the form lists the architect/builder as unknown)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: vernacular (cobblestone construction)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-dwelling residence; the farmhouse retains its original room layout, cobblestone walls and stone details, though windows and the original door have been replaced.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.745328-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09001088.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001088/db6a11a89d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001088/db6a11a89d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PRESTON-GAYLORD_COBBLESTONE_FARMHOUSE,_WAYNE_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315445","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston-Gaylord_Cobblestone_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7241818"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/wayne-county/preston-gaylord-cobblestone-farmhouse-09001088/"}
