It served as a home, stagecoach inn, post office and dance hall.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant under Criterion A as what is thought to be the earliest European-American building in Lapeer and a social center of the rural community. It is also significant under Criterion C as an intact example of a prominent citizen's frontier residence with Greek Revival features. Its second-floor ballroom survives.","narrative":"Built in the early nineteenth century, this two-story house on Clarks Corners Road in Lapeer, Cortland County, served as the home of Royal Johnson and also operated as a stagecoach inn, post office and dance hall. It stood on the stage road between Marathon and Harford at a crossroads later labeled \"Lapeer P.O.\" on an 1876 atlas. Johnson served as town supervisor and postmaster, and the inn became the social center of a rural farming community, hosting musical gatherings into the 1920s. The building is thought to be the earliest European-American structure in the town. Its Greek Revival character shows in the entryway, with pilasters, a full entablature and sidelights, and in the corner pilasters of the main block. The rectangular, five-bay house is unusually deep, with a side door on the east elevation. Inside, the plan is largely intact and modestly finished, and the second-floor ballroom still holds a fiddlers' bench. Later rear wings and siding have altered parts of the exterior.","period_of_significance":"c. 1830-c. 1920","architect_builder":"Royal Johnson (builder)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is a single dwelling (vacant), though the form also lists a single dwelling for the owner; the main block has later siding over presumed original clapboards.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.910872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09001080.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001080/c15cfe7c6f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09001080/c15cfe7c6f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:STAGE_COACH_INN,_COURTLAND_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317161","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_Coach_Inn_(Lapeer,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7596778"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cortland-county/stage-coach-inn-09001080/"}
