Sherwood. It also reflects the early twentieth-century interest in colonial architecture and antiques. Since 1958 it has been maintained as a museum and farmstead by the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities.","narrative":"Set on 2.07 acres in East Setauket, this shingled saltbox farmhouse began around 1730 as a small dwelling on land held by the Jayne family. About 1780 the house was roughly doubled in size to the east, giving it the center-chimney plan, nine-over-six windows and split \"Dutch\" front door still visible today. The farm declined as a working operation by 1900, and in 1908 it was bought by New York attorney Howard C. Sherwood, who used it as a country retreat and showcase for antiques. Between 1908 and 1940 he restored the house, added a rear kitchen wing and dormer, and installed salvaged paneling and flooring from other period buildings. A carriage house, pump house and privy, along with relocated farm buildings, mature trees and fences, recreate a nineteenth-century farmstead. After Sherwood's death in 1957, the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities acquired the property and has operated it as a museum since 1958.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1730-1957","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"New England Colonial; Colonial Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Maintained since 1958 as a restored historic house and open-air museum hosting public events and educational programs.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.822362-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000969.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000969/937fb93f08-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000969/937fb93f08-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherwood-Jayne_House;_East_Setauket-3.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sherwood-Jayne_House;_East_Setauket-3.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322244","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherwood-Jayne_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7495489"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/sherwood-jayne-house-09000969/"}
