It was designed by architect Chester A. Patterson.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinctive and intact example of an early-20th-century Westchester County estate under Criterion C for architecture. It shows symmetrical Neoclassical design with columned porches, a balustrade and an unusual central attic story. The house and its grounds retain a high degree of integrity and reflect the lifestyle of the well-to-do.","narrative":"Soundview Manor is a large Neoclassical house built in 1920 in the southern part of White Plains, New York, near the Scarsdale border. Set far back from Soundview Avenue on a little over four acres, it has a stuccoed wood frame, a symmetrical five-bay front, Tuscan columned porches, pilasters, a modillioned cornice and a balustraded parapet. Inside are French doors, Rococo marble mantelpieces and a large living room. Architect Chester A. Patterson of New York City designed it in 1919 for the Dula family, probably as a wedding gift from tobacco executive Robert B. Dula to his son. The plans suggest a house meant for entertaining, with public rooms and outdoor spaces on all three levels. The third-floor sitting room once offered views of Long Island Sound, giving the house its name. Later owners included the Allen family from 1926 to 1945. The house is significant as an intact example of an early twentieth century estate, and part of it now operates as a bed and breakfast.","period_of_significance":"1919-1920","architect_builder":"Patterson, Chester A.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Neoclassical","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a bed and breakfast, with part of the house operated for that purpose.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.677497-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000957.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000957/079e71f8fe-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000957/079e71f8fe-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Soundview_Manor_2012-10-25_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Soundview_Manor_2012-10-25_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323221","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundview_Manor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7565010"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/soundview-manor-09000957/"}
