It is also significant under Criterion C as one of the finest Queen Anne style houses in Syracuse, notable for its brickwork, terra cotta details and stained glass windows said to be from the early Tiffany studio.","narrative":"Built in 1885 at 714 North McBride Street in Syracuse, this red pressed brick house was the home of Louis Will, who ran a large candle-making business and later served as the city's Progressive Party mayor. It is a high-style Queen Anne residence with an asymmetrical plan, cross gables, a three-quarter circle corner tower, a wrap-around porch, and terra cotta panels on a projecting chimney. A full-height pavilion on the north side holds the main staircase and a large stained glass window; the stained glass throughout is attributed to the early Tiffany studio. The original drawings survive but name no architect. The house faces McBride Park and predates nearby houses by twenty to thirty years. Will's candle firm shipped products worldwide, and he was active in civic affairs until his death in 1932. After his family left in 1944 the house became a Salvation Army residence. Restoration began in 2000, and it now operates as a bed and breakfast.","period_of_significance":"1885-1932","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a bed and breakfast; the current owners have been restoring the house since purchasing it in 2000, after about 30 years as a Salvation Army group home.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.650282-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000909.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000909/9e8451c06b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000909/9e8451c06b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LouisWillHouse_2011-06-19b.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LouisWillHouse_2011-06-19b.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320487","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Will_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6688379"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/will-louis-house-09000909/"}
