It also housed successive immigrant groups, notably Jewish and later Puerto Rican residents. Under Criterion C it is a well-preserved example of the work of Casper Ranger, a prominent local contractor and developer.","narrative":"Built in 1906-1907 on the former Allen farm site in Springfield's North End, this four-story, L-shaped apartment block is faced in speckled white brick with brownstone trim. Rounded bays alternate with flat panels along Dwight and Allendale Streets, and a bracketed metal cornice crowns the walls. Holyoke contractor Casper Ranger built it as one of many bowfront brick tenements housing clerical and industrial workers who commuted downtown by streetcar. Over time its tenants reflected the city's immigrant history, from Russian Jewish families in the 1910s and 1920s to Puerto Rican residents in the 1950s and 1960s. After a 1985 renovation, the building sat vacant and suffered fire, vandalism and weather damage. A 2007 rehabilitation repaired the masonry, roofing, windows, entrances and porches, and converted it to affordable housing. It was listed for its role in early 20th-century neighborhood growth and as a well-preserved work of Ranger.","period_of_significance":"1906-1959","architect_builder":"RANGER, Casper (1850-1912), General contractor; PREW, John (ca. 1846-1917), Masonry contractor","architectural_style":"Early 20th Century Revival: Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Completely rehabilitated in 2007 and converted to affordable housing after a long vacancy; currently multiple dwelling use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.907091-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7953/63795319/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/09000882.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000882/fd383e0a72-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000882/fd383e0a72-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1245_Dwight_Street,_Springfield_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1245_Dwight_Street,_Springfield_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795319","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verona_Apartments_(Springfield,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16902634"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/verona-apartments-the-09000882/"}
