The house and barn were built in 1908-09.","why_significant":"The house is an exceptionally intact example of a large early twentieth century Colonial Revival residence in South Otselic. It is also tied to Holden B. Mathewson (1865-1927), a Gladding Cordage Company partner, banker, school board president and local philanthropist. Of the homes built for Gladding executives, it is among the largest and the only one with an estate-like setting.","narrative":"Built in 1908-09 for Holden B. Mathewson, this large Colonial Revival house sits on an estate-like property at the southern edge of South Otselic. The wood-frame house has a hipped roof with gabled dormers, Doric cornerboards, a denticulated cornice, a wrap-around porch and a porte-cochere. Inside, oak trim, a three-stage staircase, built-in bookcases and cabinets survive. A gambrel-roofed carriage barn with an apartment for a hired hand and five small agricultural outbuildings remain on the grounds. Mathewson, born in nearby Pharsalia, joined the Gladding Cordage Company as a partner in 1901 and helped manage its finances until retiring in 1923. He also served on a local bank board and as president of the board of education, and he supported the Masons and the Methodist Episcopal church. The house cost a reported $25,000. No architect or builder was identified. Among homes built for Gladding executives, it is among the largest and the most intact.","period_of_significance":"1908-1927","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late nineteenth and twentieth century revivals (Colonial Revival)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with secondary structures; the exterior and interior are described as largely intact, though the slate roof was replaced with asphalt shingles.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.198499-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000860.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000860/6f101f15a6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000860/6f101f15a6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Emilyhite","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mathewson_Home_1909.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Emilyhite</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mathewson_Home_1909.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316882","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_B._Mathewson_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5879439"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/mathewson-holden-b-house-09000860/"}
