It has a reworked nineteenth-century cottage, a multi-purpose playhouse and designed gardens, all created for landscape architect Bryant Fleming.","why_significant":"The complex is argued to be a highly intact example of a modest rural estate of the first third of the twentieth century. Fleming reworked an existing worker's cottage and built a playhouse using salvaged nineteenth-century elements in an eclectic antiquarian style. It is also tied to Fleming, an early practitioner and founder of academically based landscape architecture in America.","narrative":"Set on an 11.2-acre lot above a 100-foot cliff just outside the village of Wyoming, this property was the home and showpiece of landscape architect Bryant Fleming. It includes a one-and-one-half story clapboard cottage with an L-shaped plan, a larger two-story brick and clapboard playhouse built for entertaining and overnight guests, and a series of gardens, stone walks, brick walls and a long gravel drive. Fleming enlarged a modest nineteenth-century worker's cottage and filled both buildings with salvaged leaded windows, Federal mantels and other reused parts in an eclectic antiquarian manner. Fleming, born in Buffalo in 1877, studied at Cornell, led its landscape architecture program and designed country estates and state parks. He worked for Lydia Coonley-Ward at nearby Hillside and later on the Cheekwood estate in Nashville. His own house shows his design preferences and is considered a well-preserved small country estate of about 1910 to 1940.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1910 - ca. 1940","architect_builder":"Bryant Fleming","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival; Arts & Crafts","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form lists the current function as domestic/single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.880499-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000838.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000838/998e0e6c3c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000838/998e0e6c3c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bryant_Fleming_House_Jul_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bryant_Fleming_House_Jul_11.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75323338","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Fleming_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4980568"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/wyoming-county/fleming-bryant-house-09000838/"}
