Birkmire and built in two phases between 1904 and 1912.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is a distinctive, late example of Late Gothic Revival architecture in the Bronx. It shows Gothic hallmarks such as buttressed bays, a square tower, pointed arches and stained glass. It is also a late but noteworthy neo-medieval auditorium church adapted to a sloping, curved site, and it remains largely intact inside and out.","narrative":"Tremont Baptist Church is a gray marble church at 324 East Tremont Avenue in the Mount Hope neighborhood of the Bronx. Manhattan architect William H. Birkmire designed it, and plans were filed in 1904. The basement was finished in 1906 and the upper structure was completed on August 31, 1912, after the congregation raised more funds. The building sits on a fan-shaped, sloping lot that follows a curve in the street. It has five buttressed bays with intersecting gables, pointed-arch openings, stained glass, a slate roof and a four-stage square tower. Inside is an auditorium with curved pews, a balcony and a high vaulted ceiling. The church is significant for its architecture. It is a late and distinctive example of Late Gothic Revival design and of the neo-medieval auditorium church plan popular with evangelical Protestant congregations. The building remains largely intact and continues to serve as a church.","period_of_significance":"1904-1912","architect_builder":"Birkmire, William H.","architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a church; the exterior and interior are described as virtually intact from completion, though the west elevation has non-historic stucco.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:48.841403-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000831.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000831/dd43020c46-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000831/dd43020c46-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tremont_Baptist_Church_by_camera_phone_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tremont_Baptist_Church_by_camera_phone_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316529","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tremont_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7838142"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/the-bronx/tremont-baptist-church-09000831/"}
