It includes a brick mill built in 1813, a store, houses, farm buildings, a canal aqueduct and a railroad corridor, on about 535 acres.","why_significant":"The complex preserves a largely intact mill village that operated from 1813 to 1956, with the mill retaining much of its early automated milling equipment. It shows how milling, farming, river and canal transport, and later rail shaped the area. The surrounding landscape retains its setting and integrity, and the property remained in related family ownership for generations.","narrative":"Galt's Mill Complex is a rural mill village on the James River in southeast Amherst County, Virginia, where Stovall Creek, now Beck Creek, meets the river. Its centerpiece is a brick mill dated 1813, surrounded by a c. 1900 store, a c. 1830s stone aqueduct, a boathouse, several vernacular houses and a range of log, frame and concrete barns. The mill was once five and one-half stories but was cut to two stories around 1950 because of structural problems. Inside, hand-planed supports and much of the milling machinery remain, based on an automated system patented by Oliver Evans. The mill operated until 1956. The aqueduct first carried the James River and Kanawha Canal and later a railroad line that still runs through the property. Owners included William Galt, the Warwick family, David Staples and the Turner family. The 535-acre property keeps the look of a working milling community and is protected by a conservation easement.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"The mill closed in 1956 but its equipment largely remains. Many houses and farm buildings are in use, while the boathouse is deteriorated and unused. The property is under easement with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.256523-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/6795/41679549/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000791.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000791/f289c4508c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000791/f289c4508c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GALT%27S_MILL_COMPLEX,_AMHERST_COUNTY,_VA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679549","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galt%27s_Mill_Complex","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712349"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/amherst-county/galts-mill-complex-09000791/"}
