It is a 0.43-acre boundary increase to the existing Milledge Avenue Historic District.","why_significant":"The cottage was inadvertently left out of the 1985 Milledge Avenue Historic District even though it was built during that district's period of significance on Arnold family land fronting Milledge Avenue. It is significant in architecture as an excellent example of an early 20th-century Craftsman-style bungalow in Athens, and it retains a high level of historic integrity.","narrative":"A small stucco cottage at 295 West Rutherford Street in Athens, Georgia, was added to the Milledge Avenue Historic District as a boundary increase covering 0.43 acres. Oliver Arnold, a prominent Athens businessman and later mayor, built the one-story Craftsman house in 1920 on land his family subdivided from their Milledge Avenue property. It has a hip roof, gable-roofed dormers, a half-timbered rear gable, nine-over-one windows and a porch with replaced cast-iron posts. Inside, each of the four main rooms has a fireplace, and historic mantels, moldings and wainscoting survive. The cottage was home to Ross and Carolyne Creekmore, relatives of Arnold's wife, through the 1930s, and stayed in Arnold family ownership until 1980. It was omitted from the 1985 district listing even though it was built within the district's 1850s-1930s period of significance. It is valued locally as an excellent example of an early Craftsman bungalow in Athens.","period_of_significance":"1850s-1930s","architect_builder":"Oliver Arnold built the cottage (the form lists architect/builder as N/A)","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Bungalow/Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; retains a high level of historic integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.2395-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/09000748.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000748/5531123376-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000748/5531123376-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gwringle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:600_Block_of_Milledge_Avenue,_photographer_facing_south.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwringle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:600_Block_of_Milledge_Avenue,_photographer_facing_south.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"85000852","name":"Milledge Avenue Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/milledge-avenue-historic-district-85000852/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207480","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49526519"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/clarke-county/milledge-avenue-historic-district-boundary-increase-09000748/"}
