O'Shea to designs by Burk and Sanborn of Lynn.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the finest and least altered commercial blocks in Peabody. Built by the city's leading entrepreneur, it foreshadowed downtown Peabody's growth as a major commercial area in the early twentieth century, a growth tied to the leather-manufacturing boom.","narrative":"Standing on Main Street near Peabody Square, this two-story Renaissance Revival commercial block was built in 1903-1904 for Thomas H. O'Shea, a leather manufacturer and real estate dealer who was at one time the city's largest landowner and taxpayer. Burk and Sanborn of Lynn designed it, and local contractors carried out the work. The Main Street front has a central projecting pavilion, an arched entry, and three storefronts on each side beneath a pressed metal entablature. Upstairs, round-arched windows are paired between Corinthian pilasters, with egg-and-dart archivolts, carved keystones, and shell-motif transoms. The first story is rusticated limestone and the second is buff brick. Original tenants included a druggist, dry goods dealer, clothier, grocers, and a milliner, while the second floor housed fraternal organizations. When it was built, Main Street was still largely residential. The block is regarded as one of Peabody's best preserved commercial buildings and an early marker of downtown's commercial growth.","period_of_significance":"1903-1904","architect_builder":"M. F.
