Despite later alterations, it keeps the massing and hand-hewn twelve-post timber frame of an eighteenth-century Cape Cod dwelling. It appears to be the oldest surviving dwelling in the community and is a resource for studying early domestic architecture.","narrative":"This one-story, five-bay Cape Cod-type house on Mill Road in Westhampton Beach dates from the mid-eighteenth century. The Westhampton Beach Historical Society moved it in 2008 from nearby Main Street to save it from demolition, and it now sits beside the circa 1840 Tuthill House on land leased from the village. Wood shingles cover the walls and roof, and the front has a center door flanked by six-over-six windows. The rear was altered in the mid-twentieth century with a long dormer and two bay windows. Inside, a twelve-post timber frame survives, including a gunstock post and hand-hewn joists, rafters, studs and braces. The nomination presents the house as probably the oldest surviving dwelling in the community and as a rare, well-preserved example of the Cape Cod form that developed on Long Island. The Society intends to restore it as a place to study early architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"New England Colonial (Cape Cod type)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Relocated in 2008 by the Westhampton Beach Historical Society to avoid demolition; on leased village land, with plans for restoration as an architectural study environment and museum use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:47.848777-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/09000656.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000656/5ecb9bb44f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000656/5ecb9bb44f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foster_Meeker_House_Westhampton_Beach,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Foster_Meeker_House_Westhampton_Beach,_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322120","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foster-Meeker_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5473608"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/foster-meeker-house-09000656/"}
