It is also a rare regional example of a frame antebellum depot. It reflects the railroad's role in creating rural communities and embodies mid- to late-nineteenth-century railroad architecture, with a typical four-room combined passenger and freight plan.","narrative":"Fort Mitchell Depot is a one-story frame railroad station in the rural settlement of Fort Mitchell, in the southwest corner of Lunenburg County, Virginia. It sits on the west side of the Norfolk Southern tracks. Built in two phases, the rear freight section dates to about 1860 and uses hand-hewn heavy timber with mortise and tenon joints, while the front passenger section was added about 1884. A shallow hip roof with deep overhangs forms an open porch on all four sides. Inside, a typical four-room plan holds a freight area, an office, and two separate waiting rooms for white and Black passengers. The depot is the last remaining station in a county that once had seven, and a rare surviving frame antebellum depot in the region. It is tied to the railroad that helped Fort Mitchell grow into a trading center with stores, a post office and a sawmill. Passenger use ended in 1956. The building is vacant but stable, and local residents plan to convert it into a community center.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1860 - 1956","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movement (vernacular depot)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant/not in use; in stable but fair condition.
