The Mason Syndicate built it under engineer Thomas K. Menifee.","why_significant":"The bridge is significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as a well-preserved example of fine 19th-century stone masonry and engineering. It is the largest of three remaining arch structures built by Menifee and the most impressive in the area. The railroad was never completed to Salem, so the bridge never carried trains.","narrative":"Built in 1873 over Gish Branch in Salem, Virginia, this limestone bridge was meant to carry the Valley Railroad, a planned 113-mile line linking Harrisonburg to Salem. It is a semicircular vaulted tunnel through an earthen embankment, 69 feet long with a 12-foot span, and its keystones sit 15 feet above the creek. The roughly dressed, coursed stone, thought to be quarried nearby, was laid by local craftsmen. Thomas K. Menifee supervised the 14-mile section that included the bridge, under the Mason Syndicate. Work stopped in late 1874 after the Panic of 1873 left the railroad insolvent, so no trains ever crossed. The bridge survives in good condition and is the largest of three remaining Menifee arch structures; the others and much of the roadbed were lost to road widening and residential development. It is recognized for its engineering and stonework and as a reminder of post-Civil War railroad ambitions. It currently has no public access.","period_of_significance":"1873","architect_builder":"Menifee, Thomas K., engineer, The Mason Syndicate, builders","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Not in use; the site has no roads or public access, though public access and interpretive signage are hoped for.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.745994-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/6835/41683556/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/09000617.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000617/2e69a8a42e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000617/2e69a8a42e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Xhancock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valley_RR_Bridge_2008_facing_south.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Xhancock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Valley_RR_Bridge_2008_facing_south.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41683556","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_Railroad_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16902510"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/salem/valley-railroad-bridge-09000617/"}
