It also retains a high degree of architectural integrity. It is also one of the last intact two-story homes of the early 20th century in West Brownsville.","narrative":"Built in 1909 on three lots at the corner of West Washington and 13th streets, this two-and-one-half-story wood-frame house sits in Brownsville's first suburb, West Brownsville. Frederick and Zuleika Hicks built it in the American Foursquare form, with a pyramidal hipped roof, full-width porch with Tuscan columns, a central dormer and numerous multi-pane windows. Details borrowed from other styles include a Queen Anne-like bay window and decorative rafter tails. Around 1925 the Gregg family added a glass-walled sunroom with terrazzo flooring that changed the front facade. A two-story servants' quarters and a two-car garage stand behind the house and are counted as contributing buildings. John Gregg, a Brownsville bank president, and his wife Lily owned the home for more than forty years. It was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of a modified Foursquare, with a period of significance from 1909 to about 1925.","period_of_significance":"1909-c. 1925","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Movements: Other/American Foursquare","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling with a secondary structure; the living room and sunroom have been restored to their original design.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.869489-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/9714/40971444/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/09000486.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000486/f5bfc9700d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000486/f5bfc9700d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hicks-Gregg_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hicks-Gregg_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971444","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002673"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cameron-county/hicks-gregg-house-09000486/"}
