Third Street in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio, completed in 1926 in the Late Gothic Revival style for the Selby Shoe Company. A rear two-car garage is also counted as contributing.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criterion A for industry, as a product of a prominent regional shoe manufacturer that illustrates Ironton's industrial diversification in the 1920s and after. It is significant under Criterion C as an intact example of Late Gothic Revival architecture in Ironton.","narrative":"Completed in 1926, this five-story reinforced concrete factory on South Third Street in Ironton was built for the Selby Shoe Company, which chose Ironton when expanding beyond Portsmouth. The T-shaped building has a symmetrical eleven-bay front with a central entrance pavilion, buttress-like pilasters, blind Tudor arches and bands of blue, green and orange ceramic tile. Inside, open floors with mushroom columns, original wood flooring, stairwells and an elevator survive. After Selby Shoe left, Wilson Athletic Goods made sporting equipment here from 1944 to 1984, and Cabletron Systems made circuit boards from 1987 to 1997. The building is recognized for its link to Ironton's shift from iron production toward varied manufacturing in the early twentieth century, and as a well-preserved local example of Late Gothic Revival design. Today it is largely vacant, with first-floor storage use.","period_of_significance":"1926-1958","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently largely vacant, except for the first floor, which is used mainly for storage.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.549134-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/09000444.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000444/4ba31fe4fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000444/4ba31fe4fa-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Selby_Shoe_Company_Building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Selby_Shoe_Company_Building.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71989639","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138457254"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/lawrence-county/selby-shoe-company-building-09000444/"}
