It is also an intact example of the industrial architecture of local architects Damon Brothers.","narrative":"Rising eight stories above Locust Street in Haverhill, this red brick building was constructed in 1913 as a speculative factory for lease to shoe-related businesses. Three local men, a express company manager, an insurance agent and a lawyer, formed a trust to build it, following the model of the nearby Haverhill Board of Trade Building. Damon Bros. designed it with mill construction, load-bearing brick walls, a heavy timber frame and a grand arched entrance on the west facade. Early tenants included shoe manufacturers, leather dealers and a newspaper; later occupants included printers and Western Electric, which used the whole building in 1946. Because shoe machinery was leased rather than bought, small operators could start businesses in rented space like this. A 2007 rehabilitation produced 32 apartments and restored storefronts and windows based on original drawings and photographs. It is considered locally significant for its industrial history and architecture, with a period of significance from 1913 to 1959.","period_of_significance":"1913-1959","architect_builder":"Damon Bros., architects","architectural_style":"Early 20th century Classical Revival (paneled brick)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 2007 into 32 residential units, with a north storefront that could serve as commercial space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.556912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/7947/63794764/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/09000436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000436/f20fda5db0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/09000436/f20fda5db0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HaverhillMA_MerrimackAssociatesBuilding.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HaverhillMA_MerrimackAssociatesBuilding.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794764","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merrimack_Associates_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16895047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/merrimack-associates-building-09000436/"}
